An ok book but not for the beginner3

This book has a well written chapter on the economics of foreign exchange. This books' chapters on e-foreign exchange and innovations in e-fx are rather useless for the beginner and also outdated.

The chapters on technical analysis and the individual trainer are short and to the point. It's good information but not enough 'meat' to assist the individual to make better trades. More or the same information can be found in other books that also explain in more details.

There are several chapters that are mainly written for large institutional traders which I didnt find very useful other than getting a 'birds-eye' view from their position.

In my opinion, this book is more for intermediate traders but I wouldn't recommend it to beginners.

The one FX book to grab when you need to know it all!5
After reading almost 50 books on the Forex Market and trading the markets live for a few years, I decided that Ms. Taylor's Mastering Foreign Exchange and Currency Options: A Practical Guide to the New Marketplace is the one Forex Book I would take with me if forced to select one. Why? Because it is the only book to somehow comprehensively cover topics as diverse as Currenex, the application of Technical Analysis to FX, Buy Side vs. Sell Side FX Dealer dynamics, Corporate Treasury Hedging, and of course a fairly essential history of both the economics of foreign exchange and the fundamentals relevant to trading it. The book is only 380 pages and most certainly does meet the needs of entry level traders. Intermediate traders or professionals will certainly find topics covered which prompt an occasional: " I didn't know that !". Again, Ms. Taylor has given us the essentials of both the theoretical dimensions of Foreign Exchange pricing both Spot, Futures, and Options AND the nitty, gritty incidentals of how the technology works to make the market happen. What most books on Forex fail to do - this book does achieve. Few Forex primers squarely place Spot Forex into the Inter-Bank context where it belongs. Few books adequately integrate information about Corporate Treasury concerns with the nature of Central Bank Intervention. Trading Forex on the Retail level without understanding CLS or the Flow Information available through Currenex is like Racing Nascar without knowing how to change a tire. Ms. Taylor's book achieves this through the gift of being able to simplify, coordinate, and render the essential of a topic without loss of rigor or information. Usually books achieving this are a dense read, but this book is not - and that is the work of a great teacher.

Waste of time1
Claims to be a practical guide but is padded out with useless chapters on history and economics. The chapters on practical topics come very late in the book and are by comparision very short and deficient in explanations. Almost no coverage of operational topics, so "practical" only in the front office sense and I have found better material for free on google.

Equally useful and informative was his chapter on the effect of interest rates, there isn't enough space for me to go into it, instead I will let you gather the pearls of wisdom for yourself.
Mr. Laidi finally concludes that some of the historical tendencies are currently being challenged and that only time will tell if a new relationship has emerged or if history will again be proven right. Pick up this book if you want to read the work of an original thinker at the top of his craft. Whether you trade FX or another market, I think you will benefit from Mr. Laidi's insight.

A Forex Book with Value5
I've read and flipped through a number of currency trading/forex books, both as I was learning the trade and in my continuing education. Most books on the subject seem to be put out to sell with little regard to original content and value-added information. They typically spend half the book going over the very basic of foreign exchange markets and lingo - basically repeating what every other intro-forex book says, and then spend the next half of the book either going over general trading areas - such as trading systems or technical areas of trading. There is little to no value-added information/analysis for the forex trader, unless you are a complete newbie.

This book is different - and more in-line for someone who has read up on forex basics and/or has begun to dabble in forex trading and wants to begin to understand the history of different forex markets (as in their past movements), drivers of said markets, and intermarket connections. Unlike other books on the subject, there is not 200 plus pages of forex definitions and filler - it dives straight into valuable content (chapter 1 is about gold and the dollar - history, linkage, trends). It then goes on to cover oil and its linkage, the dollar's historic performance (and the drivers/causes) vs. other major currencies and other macro and micro drivers of the currency markets. This is not a trading book per se (it does not tell you how to trade various markets) - but a great supplement to the trader's understanding of the markets he or she trades in. If you trade forex but don't understand the concepts in this book, my bet is that you are a losing trader, whether you trade long-term or short.

Overall - the best book out there I have seen about the currency markets, their drivers, correlations/linkage and past performances. After reading you'll have a better understanding of the major currencies' past performances and cyclical behaviors, what drives these cycles, their linkages to one another (as well as to gold and oil), as well as understanding the impact on currency markets of central bank decisions and the trends of other markets (e.g. equities, commodities). Highly recommended for anyone currently or looking to trade forex, or someone who just wants to understand the currency markets, especially in relation to global economics/events.

Understanding the Reasons Currencies Move5
Anyone who is serious about forex needs to read this book and follow Ashraf's analysis via ashraflaid [...]. Ashraf's career spans all aspects of the currency markets (from assessing risk for the World Bank to analyzing bond markets) and he truly knows what makes the markets tick.

After reading and studying his material you can watch the currency markets fluctuate based on the forces that exist in the financial world (and understand why). Gold, Oil, Bonds, the Stock Markets and World Events are all catalysts for the key driver of currencies "RISK" vs. "Risk Aversion". Ashraf explains to the reader which way the pressure moves based on these interrelated markets.

The core of this book is studying the correlations that exist in the financial markets and how they affect currency movement. Ashraf explains that these correlations come and go and that good trading is based around understanding the current set of data and the correlations prevailing. If you like politics, economics and trading then this book is a must read and re-read.

From the Inside Flap
Foreign exchange is the most traded instrument in the world. It's not hard to understand why. Nobody needs to buy stocks, but because of today's extensive global trade we must all deal directly or indirectly with the forex world. Yet, while trading foreign exchange is one of the most exciting and potentially lucrative activities in the world, about 90 percent of traders lose money. In How to Make a Living Trading Foreign Exchange, Courtney D. Smith provides a concrete and comprehensive approach to becoming a profitable forex trader.

Smith first explains all the basic information you need to know to get started in trading forex. He then introduces the tested, profitable techniques that will help you make money in the forex market, offering a variety of different methods to use over different time horizons—from those that look at the market from the perspective of days and weeks to those that hold positions for less than one day. Smith describes, for instance, a system that monitors the market from three different time perspectives and doesn't enter the market until all three are calling for an entry into the market.

He also details a new way to filter trades that eliminates about half of all losing transactions. And he tells how to sidestep the usual traps that drain money from your account using his method to identify short-term turning points and, more important, to identify major turning points. Smith concludes by showing you how all the techniques in the book fit together into a coordinated program for creating profits.

Throughout the book, the author stresses the two most important aspects of trading: risk management and trader psychology. How to Make a Living Trading Foreign Exchange shows how to take risk management one step beyond and use it as an offensive weapon for enhancing profits. And perhaps, most important, it tells how to overcome the biggest block against making money in the markets: your own psychology. Whether you're a novice or a pro, says Smith, following the techniques in this book will turn forex trading into your ticket to financial freedom.

Praise for How To Make A Living Trading Foreign Exchange

"Courtney Smith has hit it out of the park with this book. Not only does he provide great insight into both the inner workings of the marketplace and original trading methodologies, but he also devotes much discussion to the often overlooked, immensely important aspects of trading such as money management, discipline, and psychology. After all, as he aptly opines, these are demons traders must slay to be successful."
—Tom Demark, Founder, Market Studies, Inc.

"I learned a long time ago if Courtney Smith writes it, I readit. Glad I did. I picked up three great insights in my first read-through."
—Larry Williams, author of Trade Stocks and Commodities with the Insiders, The Right Stock at the Right Time, Day Trade Futures Online, and Long-Term Secrets to Short-Term Trading

Customer Reviews

Good book for people who already have money4
This is an interesting read with some solid methods for trading forex. My biggest complaint is that it only talks about positon (long term) trading based on the daily charts, and has almost nothing about day trading. Position trading is fine if you have a large amout of capitol and can withstand some major drawdowns, but the majority of traders are starting with much less money. The author has been a professional trader for many years, and at least this is a book written by someone who actually does make money consistently and has a long term track record of success. The methods presented are successful in the long run if your account can withstand losing hundreds of pips 45% of the time.

Perfect text book for an already good trader5
I teach forex trading to an already well trained group of traders. We are accomplished technical traders and this is a fabulous text book to learn old school technical/bank style trading. Best I have found. Very solid stuff, and best of all it works.
You could actually make a living for life trading Courtneys methods.

Solid forex book!5
This book contains some solid forex systems that do make money in the long run, no doubt about that. Even though the author only reveals the backtest of the powerful Conquistador system, most of the other winning trading setups (like the new Donchian system) have been fully backtested elsewhere.

This book is also full of extremely clever trading ideas that did make a huge difference in my daily trading.

So buy it, use it, profit from it, this "just meat and potatoes" forex book definitively belongs to your trading library.

The perfect forex primer!5
Although this book is primarily written for people that are clueless about foreign exchange (FX), it will actually teach the clued-up a thing or two also. The broad range of topics covered is what you'd expect to find in a book that is considerably thicker and more expensive - there's a detailed insight into the marketplace and its participants, the products (spot, forwards, swaps, options), fundamental vs. technical analysis, and more. The author writes in a concise, but extremely readable style and makes extensive use of pictures and diagrams. Furthermore, the book is bang up to date with recent developments in FX, such as the Euro and electronic dealing (that is, at the time I wrote this review). Finally, as an added bonus, this book is not overly biased towards the US or the US dollar, which I feel is especially appropriate for an FX book. Highly recommended!

Great for the clueless but not for the pros4
As another reviewer noted, this book is definitely not for people who are ready to study "financial engineering". It is, however, PERFECT for people who want to learn about foreign exchange but don't have a finance background. It does not TRY to be a book for rocket scientists, so criticizing it for that is unfair. More advanced books that have lots of integral and summation signs assume that you already understand the basic information in this book.

This is the only book I have found which explains this important market at a level that practically anyone can understand. I'm a math student doing a mathematical modelling project involving finance and investment and so I needed something like this: I do not know anyone who invests and the simple fact is that most people don't know much about the mechanics of the markets. This book fills in a gap in plain English with little verbosity or unnecessary digressions. Thus, as a basis for gaining intuition and domain knowledge in an undergraduate university project, this book is everything it attempts to be.

A poor text book1
This book does not help me much with my foreign exchange course as a financial engineering student.

Many examples in the book have obvious numeric errors. Also it does not talk about any logic behind the calculation. The little calculation it has is neither rigorous nor complete. Reading this book only caused me more questions and confusions. I had to read other books as a correction or supplement.

It's definitely not for people looking for mathematical reasoning. It does not even talk about Garman-Kohlhagen formula, or Spot-Forward parity etc. It only has some explanations of some jargons, even those explanations are not very well presented.

Another thing I don't like is that at several places two consecutive paragraphs are identical except for a few keywords -- an obvious result of copy & paste.

Had I known the content of the book, I would not have bought it! I bought the e-book & didn't know the content until after I bought it. And e-books cannot be returned. Otherwise I would have done it!

Customer Reviews

Do not pay for his promotion1
It has nothing new about Forex trading or even trading in general, it has some technical analysis (you can find it in any TA book). Misleading the newbies by showing some good looking trades using the Moving averages and "his " Oscillator (I am not sure what is so special about it), giving false impression that this what you will get if you follow him (going to his institution). The 5 star reviews do not give a good reason to buy the book only saying you must buy it (may be they forget to say WHY to buy it). So they have no merits, except what they are saying repeatedly that the author is an expert, who mentored thousands of traders. He also is saying that about himself (more than once) in the book. If you want to know about technical analysis for forex or stocks -which is the same- you can check Jon Murphy, Schwager, or J. Magee.... books
If you are looking for psychology of trading go for Mark Douglas or others. The 200 pages of shallow information could be obtained - for free - from the Internet or any basic trading book. Save your money. Check the book first before you buy it. Do not believe the "must read" recommendations for no good reason. Because there is nothing useful in the book. Let him pay for his promotion

As a former insider at MTI, I can attest to the previous "1" star ratings and support the same with facts. This author's primary business is in education; however, this author doesn't even understand the product of sums. This book is nothing more than an extended table of contents coupled with an exorbitant number of references to his business. The decision to buy this text should be one of prudence. Please review the book physically before buying.

The author is preying on the "ignorant" public that is eager to trade. I would not put is past this author to instruct his own employees/colleagues/friends to write positive reviews (FxAngel, R. Enright).

A few good text recommendations are from CTrader's review that I agree with:
"If you want to know about technical analysis for forex or stocks -which is the same- you can check Jon Murphy, Schwager, or J. Magee.... books
If you are looking for psychology of trading go for Mark Douglas or others."

I have to agree with Ctrader (see below, 1 star).
It is unbelievable that a book like that could be published in 2007. There is absolutely nothing new at all. The usage of the patterns is not even well described. The usable content is very basic and limited. It is full of personal experiences or allusion to other stories. Full of advertisement for his MTI.
It does not deliver what is written on the front cover. "The rules for turning patterns into profit" where is that? The title: "The 10 essentials..." What are these 10 things exactly?

I bought that book thanks to the 5 star reviews below (before the 1 star review from Ctrader) since I cannot have a look to books where I live...
The 5 star reviews giving no valuable information seems to bloom very easily and fast for this book!
